The Boneyard in Disney’s Animal Kingdom is now permanently closed to make way for a new Tropical Americas land.

The Boneyard Closed

The Boneyard: Fossil Fun Site was part of DinoLand U.S.A. Its last day of operation was September 1, 2025.

The area closed with the rest of Disney’s Animal Kingdom at 6 p.m., which is currently the park’s normal operating hours. Several Cast Members and some Disney Security personnel were present at the time of the closure, but there were no major celebrations to mark the occasion.

The Boneyard was an open-air space designed to look like a dinosaur dig. Intended for children ages 10 and under, the area included a dig site with faux dinosaur bones covered in rocks. There was also a more traditional play structure with caves, slides, rope bridges, and more.

While the last guests were exiting the area, a nearby Cast Member was heard saying over the speakers, “Remember, extinction is forever, but so are the memories.”

DinoLand U.S.A.

TriceraTop Spin

The first phase of DinoLand’s closure took place in January 2025, when Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama closed. This area included TriceraTop Spin, Fossil Fun Games, and Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures. While the latter’s building remains standing to be repurposed for the new land, the rest of the Dino-Rama area has already been demolished.

DINOSAUR, Restaurantosaurus, Dino-Bite Snacks, Trilo-Bites, and the nearby character meet and greets remain open, although construction permits for the area have been filed. Disney stated DINOSAUR will not close until 2026.

Tropical Americas

People walk through an archway with a clock tower and lush greenery in the background on a sunny day, reminiscent of the charming ambiance found in Pueblo Esperanza.

The Tropical Americas land will open in 2027. It will include a brand-new Encanto ride, which takes guests into the film’s story on the day Antonio receives his gift of speaking with animals. Found in the land’s fictional village of Pueblo Esperanza will be a carousel of carved Disney animals. A new playground will replace The Boneyard. DINOSAUR will become a new version of Indiana Jones Adventure that sees Indy going into an ancient Mayan temple to investigate stories of a mythical creature.
